By April, most of India is planning around the heat rather than despite it. The reliable fix is altitude — anywhere above roughly 1,500 metres runs noticeably cooler, and a few destinations are worth planning a whole summer trip around.
Kashmir is the obvious answer, and for good reason — Gulmarg and Pahalgam sit comfortably below 25°C even in June, with Dal Lake's houseboats as a bonus most other hill stations can't match. Himachal Pradesh spreads the option across more towns: Manali for scenery and adventure activities, Shimla for a gentler, more accessible trip with young kids.
Sikkim and Darjeeling combine the cool weather with tea gardens and mountain views of Kanchenjunga, and see far fewer tourists than Himachal in peak season. For something less predictable, Coorg in Karnataka offers a summer escape within reach of Hyderabad and Bangalore without the flight a northern hill station requires.
